Freezer Beef Buying Guide
Everything You Need To Know Before Filling Your Freezer
Is Buying Beef In Bulk Right For You?
Buying an 1/8th, quarter, half, or whole cow is a great way to stock up on high-quality beef, support local farming, and save money long-term. But it can be confusing if you’re new to the process—we’re here to make it simple.
What You're Really Getting
When you buy “half a cow,” you’re buying hanging weight beef that will be processed to your specifications. Here’s what that means:
- Live Weight: The animal’s weight on the hoof
- Hanging Weight: The weight after slaughter (includes bone, fat, etc.)
- Final Packaged Weight: The beef you actually take home (boneless, trimmed cuts)
- Expect around 55–65% of the hanging weight as take-home beef
What's Included In An Order?
Each order includes a mix of premium steaks, roasts, ground beef, and more. Here’s a typical example from a half share:
- Steaks: Bone-In Rib-Eyes steaks, NY Strip steaks, Filet Mignon steaks, Sirloin steaks, and Eye Round steaks
- Roasts: Chuck roasts and Brisket
- Ground Beef: Approximately 30-40% of your beef
- Other Cuts: Stew Meats, Cube steaks, and Short Ribs
- By Request: Bones, Oxtail, Tongue, and Organs
How Much Meat Will You Get?
| Beef Share | Hanging Weight (est.) | Take-Home Beef | Freezer Space Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/8 | approx. 75-100 Ibs | 45–65 lbs | 2–3 cubic feet |
| 1/4 | approx. 150–200 lbs | 90–120 lbs | 4-5 cubic feet |
| 1/2 | approx. 300-400 Ibs | 180-240 Ibs | 8-10 cubic feet |
| Whole | approx. 600-800 Ibs | 360-500 Ibs | 16-20 cubic feet |
Note: These are estimates. Weight and yield vary by animal.
